This short sequence depicts the frail and complex nature of human relationships. At the same time I wanted the piece to have a darkly humorous tone, hence the use of pictograms which in a way are almost a mechanical visual representation of human nature. data-mid="6868593" border="0" align="left"/> The idea of this artist's book originated from a series of random photographs I had taken of Edinburgh’s Castle Terrace car park at night. (First four photos in the gallery above) These black and white pictures made me realise about the potential of a story born out of images of this desolate location – a ‘non-place’ evoking urban anxiety where pedestrians might not feel safe. The next step was to show the pictures to a writer – Sergio Alvarez Uribe, who I then asked to write a short story in response to the location and the mood of the photographs. Together, we set a brief that drove us to tell a short story in 10 photographs accompanied by narrative text. The resulting anecdote features a man who is determined to break free from who he was. After gathering everything that connects him to his past, the character goes to an abandoned car park and leaves it all behind inside a suitcase. There are several mysteries at the centre of the book: what is in the suitcase? Why does the narrator want to abandon it? What does it represent? Why is there a feeling of relief in leaving “it” behind? Why do we assume there is a threatening mystery to this unfolding situation that is being described visually? The last phrase of the narrative is “All I was fits in that suitcase”, and there is a feeling of relief at the loss of identity that abandoning the suitcase instills. data-mid="6868895" border="0" align="left"/> This book consists of a series of photographs of the dedicatory plaques of memorial park benches, found in and around the city of Edinburgh. Each plaque photograph is accompanied by a photo of the view seen from the bench. In this way, I am commemorating the people named on the plaques and the places they loved, as well as some of my own favourite places in Edinburgh. The book thus becomes a memorial or aide-mémoire for my unforgettable time in the Scottish capital, and a tribute to the unknown people named by the plaques. These benches are a place of rest and reflection, and so is the book itself. In the second part of his highly influential book Camera Lucida, Roland Barthes treats every photograph as a memorial and contemplates on the very essence of the medium – its spectral conjuring of death-in-life. There lies the book’s most penetrating influence – in Barthes’ mournful analysis of the strong relation between photography and mortality, as he goes through photographs of his late mother. The resulting images are then combined with basic graphic elements – form and colour – turning the photographs into abstract Photo-Graphic images. This image-making process derives from my interest in abstraction in photography and the flexibility of this wonderful medium. An interesting view on the subject was made by artist Liz Deschenes when giving an interview to Frieze Magazine (Issue 125, September 2009 p.114) – ‘All photographs are simultaneously representational and abstract, constructions that have gone through translations and manipulations – either mechanically, digitally, or both.
